Blue Tattoo is where Derek is presently focusing
his efforts as a musician. He plays guitar and sings (half of the time) in the
band. To date, they have only recorded a four-song EP, tentitively titled "The
Logan County EP." Derek is excited about their coming work and is proud of the
stuff the band is producing.
Says Derek: "I like this band because it
allows me to do some things I can't do as a solo musician. It pushes me in
different directions--some that I like more than others--and makes me push
myself harder than I would if I were writing just for my own satisfaction. I
like having other people hear and question my writing...and these guys do that.
A lot. Sometimes to a fault (laughs)!
Mostly, I'm just glad to still be
writing and playing music with my brother, Dave. We're the only two people in
the world who see life the way we do, and I really like forcing that on others.
We work pretty well together. We make good co-leaders. I handle most of the
music-direction (though Dave writes lyrics and has first call on vetos and
whatnot) and Dave handles the attitude of the group. It's a good
balance.
The EP is good. Sean Russell recorded/engineered it for us, and
he did such a good job that he's now a member of the band. It's not really
focused. It tries to show off all sides of us, but only has four songs in which
to do that. We're hoping to make a proper record sooner or later, and when we
do, I'll write something more detailed...but for now, I think this will
do."
