Discography - Waitin' on the Rain

(Sorry it's a little pixelated.  Working on getting a better image.)

This is the fourth CD Derek did with The Michael Feldman Group. Derek has no role as a writer or producer in the band. As such, this website is not adequately structured to detail this project, but Derek will share some words about it below...

3/3/09:

I re-listened to this recently. It's a great record. I had some initial complaints, coming out of the record back when we first did it. A lot of that came from having had a bad time in the studio...but that reflected unfairly on the overall record, I think. I still feel like the background vocals are too hot (though she's got a lovely voice, background means BACKGROUND). I also feel like the bass is too low (I know what I played and I still can't hear it). However, the record is really good. It's probably Mike's best work. You can chart from record to record how he grew as a writer and as a studio-musician. This is a good marker for how much he grew.

I mentioned some bad experiences recording. Well, yeah...that's true. It was just so DIFFERENT from every recording session I'd done up to that point. The engineer insisted on the drummer using electronic drums (and if I have any criticism of the record, it's that I think you can tell that the drums are electronic). And my issues with the actual mix are noted above...but honestly, those don't take away from it, if you're objective. As one of the musicians who did the actual work, yeah...I've got those issues. As a music fan, I really like this record.

Mike struck a chord with his lyrics on this one, as well as the music. It's probably the most mature record he's done so far. I like his Christian records, but his "secular" writing is really great. I should say, though, that I don't feel like Christ is absent in ANY of his work. He may not write about Jesus in a given song, but he still represents Christ in being a good, Christian man having a good time. "Eat, drink, and be merry, for this is the gift of God," I believe the Bible says (Ecclesiastes 3:13, though the translation differs a little)... This is by far the best record Mike's done. (Plus, the pedal-steel sounds really cool!)
